PRP is also known as Platelet-Rich Plasma and it is a treatment to help with hair loss by taking plasma from your blood and injecting it into your scalp to help stimulate growth. The Hair Loss Recovery team has put this article together to help you discover further what PRP is, how it works, what the benefits are, and who is the ideal candidate. Therefore, if you would like to get all of your questions answered regarding Thornhill Hair Restoration with PRP, you can find all of your answers here.

Where Did PRP Come From?

This form of treatment was first used by doctors in 2005 in Europe to help with wound healing, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and sports medicine. It was popularly used in sports medicine to help athletes with joint-related injuries. Years later, dermatologists began using it to treat hair loss once they determined it could help promote lost hair growth. It was also used at this time to treat different skin issues.

How Does It Work?

PRP helps to promote hair growth by drawing blood from the patient’s body (usually the arm) and spinning the extracted blood to remove the plasma found within it. Plasma is what contains platelets that help to promote hair growth. Once the plasma is extracted, it is then inserted into areas of the scalp that are affected by hair loss. Usually, there are 15-20 injections that happen per session.

After the needles have been inserted, there may be mild soreness in that area but, one of the benefits is that there are no other side effects of this treatment. Each session usually takes about 30 minutes and, you might experience tightness or discomfort but, you should walk out of the session only having mild soreness. Most people say it just feels like a little pressure.

What Are the Benefits?

Although the results of PRP do not happen immediately, there are still benefits and results that come from this treatment. In a study conducted of 11 men with androgenetic alopecia, after they have received four sessions of PRP they noticed increased growth of 30%. As well, studies have explored the correlation between PRP and hair thickness. If you want to hear of more success stories, just ask our team!

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

Both men and women who have androgenetic alopecia are great candidates for this treatment. For men, this means male-pattern baldness, and for women, this means hair thinning that could be a result of menopause. As well, those who have lost their hair within the last five years are great candidates as those who have waited longer usually have small hair follicles that make it hard to see results.
